Food allergy sufferers need not feel like they are getting the shaft on Thanksgiving. Its not necessary to avoid holiday foods if you make small modifications to make your favorite recipes safe. In many recipes, one food allergen can be replaced with a safe substitute without compromising the taste of the recipe. Eggs can be replaced with flax or egg replacer products. Numerous dairy-free beverages, such as soy or rice milk, can be used as a substitute for milk without sacrificing taste. Gluten-free flours, such as quinoa or amaranth, will fill the bill for regular flour. Sometimes a recipe must be completely made over for an individual with more than one food allergy or sensitivity. Sex with animals linked to penis cancer

The study of 492 men from rural Brazil found that 35 percent of study participants, who ranged from 18 to 80 years old and included both penile cancer patients and healthy men, reported having sex with animals (SWA) in their lifetimes. A team of urologists from centers around Brazil co-authored the paper, which looked at risk factors for penile cancer in men who had visited 16 urology and oncology centers in 12 Brazilian cities. In addition to SWA, three other risk factors for penile cancer were found: smoking, the presence of premalignant lesions on the penis and phimosis, a condition where the foreskin cannot be retracted over the penis.

Men who had sex with animals also reported a higher incidence of sexually transmitted diseases.

Earthquakes Put Millions of Lives, Major Cities at Risk

THURSDAY, Nov. 3 (HealthDay News) When an earthquake hits, up to 8 percent of a citys population can suffer fatal injuries, a new report suggests.

Thats because the mass casualties, lacerations, broken bones and crushing injuries associated with these natural disasters occur when bridges and roads may be impassable and local and regional emergency medical care is disrupted, according to a group of Boston researchers who report their findings online Nov. 3 in The Lancet.

Millions of people live in major cities, such as New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Delhi and Shanghai, that are situated on fault lines, the researchers noted.

In the past decade, earthquakes have caused more than 780,000 deaths, according to the report.
