A new community clinic for women and children is celebrating its grand opening today in an area of Sacramento that was underserved.

Community Resource Project WIC is one of the state’s 84 providers to the federally funded Women, Infants and Children program. Its newest location is at 8031 Fruitridge Road.

WIC provides nutrition education, food vouchers and breastfeeding support and referrals to families.

Community Resource Project, a nonprofit agency, worked with the state Department of Public Health and used geographic mapping programs to identify hot spots of unmet need in the community. Researchers reviewed data on participation in the WIC program and participation in Medi-Cal to determine where there were pregnant women on Medi-Cal who would be eligible for WIC but not currently using it, said Maureen Clark, director of the health division at Community Resource Project Inc.

The group received additional federal funding to open the new facility.

Before the new clinic opened, the closest programs for those in the Fruitridge and Power Inn area were the Community Resource Project in Elk Grove or at Sacramento County’s WIC program sites on Broadway or Rancho Cordova, Clark said.

The new clinic opened its doors in mid-May. Response has already been positive.

“Those first few families were excited because they can walk here. They don’t have to take two or three buses,” Clark said.

Another Community Resource Project WIC clinic is planned for 1440 Ethan Way.
